BACKGROUND
Why ecolawn in the first place?
Based on market research, there are over 80 million single-family homes in the U.S. and, presumably, all of them require some form of lawn care on a regular basis.
Majority of busy/working home owners would rather prefer to spend their time doing things they love instead of mowing the lawn.
Per United States EPA, a new gas powered lawn mower produces equivalent air pollution in one hour as 11 new cars, each being driven for one hour.
What if home owners could quickly find and easily hire reliable eco-friendly lawn care contractors via a mobile app?
OPPORTUNITY
Do home owners want ecolawn?
What if a digital product existed allowing working/busy home owners to easily find and hire lawn care contractors that provide electric/eco-friendly lawn care services without any hassle?
In turn, home owners will have the opportunity to choose and contribute towards a healthier lifestyle, and reduce growing air pollution by minimizing their carbon footprint.
RESEARCH
Research what works & what doesn't
✔ Understand why & how busy home owners search and hire lawn care contractors; their preferences, experiences & pain-points.
✔ Determine what opportunities may exist for creating a new digital product that offers a solution to their current set of problems.
Key research questions
(A) What are the reasons for hiring a lawn care contractor?
(B) How do home owners search for and hire a lawn care contractor?
(C) Do home owners care about air pollution to adopt eco-friendly services?
RESEARCH METRICS
Capturing users' concerns
To begin with, I surveyed 30 people, and interviewed 3 individuals who manage their lawn on a frequent basis and were willing to share their experiences & pain points.
Users prefer Credit-card over cash & Online account to manage services
Users prefer Eco-friendly services even if it costs a little extra
Users prefer to spend time with their family & friends than mow the lawn
Users like to give feedback/review the service after work is done
INITIAL CONCEPT
Conceptual Sketches & Wireframes
Learning from various pieces of research data, I came up with initial sketches & wireframes to visualize what this digital product could look like.
Initial sketches

Search for a lawn care contractor either by city, zip-code or find-near-me option

Manage current service locations, service appointments, and account settings.
Initial wireframes
Login flow - allows the user to login if they already have an existing account
Search flow - allows the user to search either by city, zip-code or near my-location option
Service details flow - allows the user to compare different plans offered by the contractor and select the one they prefer
Services management flow - allows the user to manage their service locations & corresponding services
USABILITY STUDY
Usability tests before hi-fidelity
Before moving onto final visual designs, I wanted to test the waters based on mid-fidelity wireframes created thus far and gather and implement any learnings into the hi-fidelity versions.
USABILITY FEEDBACK
Usability feedback and revision
Based on the feedback collected from a few individuals upon testing the wireframes to understand how intuitive the flows are.
User login - Added social login links such as Facebook & Google to enable instant access via social media profiles
User signup - Added Zipcode input during signup to see relevant search results instantly after successful signup
DESIGN
Visual design and component system
After reviewing and iterating on wireframes & flows, it was time to translate those to hi-fidelity screens in order to breathe life into the product with cohesive branding and aesthetics while keeping end-user goals in mind.
HI-FIDELITY ARTIFACTS
Frequently performed user tasks
Almost all users of Ecolawn would likely perform actions related to signing up/login, search a lawn care provider, book a service, pay for & manage that service online.
User Onboarding
User Signup
User Login
Find a Lawn care provider
Service provider plans
Service selection and Checkout
Service management
USABILITY TESTING
Analyze design performance via usability testing
10 participants were recruited for remote usability testing of hi-fi prototype using Lookback. The intent was to gather feedback and make iterative changes as needed and help with validation of recent enhancements to certain flows
OUTCOMES
